Our sustainability goals

Grieghallen’s green future plans

Grieghallen has decided to focus on two of the UN Sustainability Development Goals. We believe that these goals will have the greatest impact on people, environment and profitability within the framework of our social responsibility.

We will continue to reduce energy consumption by 300,000 kWh, a reduction of 7%.

We will install additional solar panels on the roof.

We will require partners and organisers to comply with the Eco-Lighthouse (Miljøfyrtårn) criteria for green events and conferences.

We will require partners and organisers to guarantee decent working conditions for all employees and contributors.

We will reduce residual waste to a maximum of 25 tonnes through waste reduction and increased sorting.

We will reduce food waste by 10% per guest.

Grieghallen carries out activities aligned with three of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Our assessment is that these goals will deliver the greatest impact for people, the environment, and long-term financial sustainability within the framework of our social mission.

Goal 8
Decent work and economic growth

Decent work means working conditions that safeguard fundamental human rights, provide a living wage, and ensure health, safety, and a sound working environment. In addition to the responsibility we have internally at Grieghallen and towards our partners, we host a large number of productions from around the world each year. We therefore aim to hold organisers to a greater degree of accountability when it comes to securing proper working conditions.

By contractually formalising such requirements, Grieghallen will be better positioned to request documentation and, in the event of contractual breaches, terminate productions.

Goal 12
Responsible consumption and production

This sustainability goal is about ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns. At Grieghallen, we will take social responsibility through more and improved sustainable practices. We will avoid overconsumption across all areas of our operations and work continuously to make Grieghallen a more environmentally friendly venue.

Goal 17
Partnerships for the goals

Grieghallen operates with a lean organisational structure. One of our strategic choices is to hire the workforce needed for all activities in the venue. We have outsourced catering, food and beverage services, technical production and technicians, security, rigging, and more. To achieve our ambitious environmental and sustainability goals, Grieghallen is fully dependent on close and effective collaboration with our partners and suppliers. We will also collaborate with other stakeholders in the Bergen region to develop sustainable solutions together.
